Understanding Cataract Surgery

What is cataract surgery?

A cataract is an eye condition that interferes with vision, hindering everyday tasks. It causes blurriness of the eyes, halos around bright lights, or double vision. This may be caused by aging, certain medical conditions, or eye injuries. The only way to correct this is through cataract surgery. This surgery removes the eye’s cloudy lensand replaces it with a clear and artificial lens which is performed by an ophthalmologist.

How is cataract surgery performed?

  1. Examination: Upon examination of the eyes, the surgeon will consider the risks of the surgery and take the measurements for the new lens. He would also advise you to take prescription drops if need be.
  2. Numb the eyes: The first step of the surgery involves the numbing of the surface of the eyes. Generally, eye drops are used so that you do not feel anything during the surgery. However, you will be awake during the whole surgery.
  3. Incision: The surgeon will make a tiny incision in your cornea.
  4. Lens removal: The eye’s lens is then broken into tiny pieces using either of the three different techniques: Phacoemulsification, Extracapsular extraction, and Laser surgery. The lens is then removed from the eye through suction.
  5. Insert new lens: Through the same incision, the surgeon will insert the new lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).
  6. Provide a protective shield: The surgeon will then put a protective shield on your eye like an eye patch to protect it.

The surgery lasts for around 10-15 minutes, followed by which the surgeon will monitor you for 15-30 minutes. In addition, the surgery is performed on an outpatient basis which means you are allowed to go home the same day. You will, however, be prescribed medication and drops before you leave. In addition, the first follow-up check will also be scheduled on the same day.
